At Proper Food, we make it a cinch to eat well on the run. We craft our fare by hand fresh every morning the only way we know how – with whole, seasonal ingredients sliced, chopped and seasoned with care. Nothing phony or factory-made. Just good, proper food that’s packed and ready to go. We cook all our meals from scratch each morning in our commissary kitchen and deliver them to our stores each day. At the end of each day, all unsold meals are donated to local food banks.


Proper Food launched in San Francisco in 2014 and has rapidly grown to ten locations in San Francisco and four in New York City earning accolades from customers, food critics and local media. Proper Food is excited to be launching in Mission Bay this coming September!


The Role

As General Store Manager, you will oversee the daily functionality of our new Proper Food location, with the support of your SF Area Manager and Area Director. The team will initially consist of 4 – 6 team members/shift leads. As Store Manager, you will be responsible for cultivating the culture of the store, and your management style will influence the flow of each business day. We are looking for someone is communicative, dependable, friendly, enthusiastic and hardworking.


This location will be open daily, and our SM will be required to be on shift during peak times/days and as needed. All our food is prepared and packed at our off-site Commissary and delivered daily to our Stores ready to grab and go! In-store food prep is limited to heating meals when requested and bagging items. Requirements

Your Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily functionality of the store - inventory, breaks, labor, peak times, deliveries, cleaning & other to-dos
  • Establish & maintain company & store culture
  • Hire, Train & develop team - new hire onboarding, provide and model customer service standards
  • Maintain records and ensure compliance with all HR and labor-related requirements
  • Oversee work performance - administer feedback directly to cashiers & supervisors; Relay performance concerns to upper management for support.
  • Become an expert on our seasonal menu - be a go-to for information on ingredients, dietary restrictions and preferences
  • Order supplies & manage inventory
  • Oversee accounting, cash handling
  • Implement and maintain food safety standards at all times
  • Maintain cleanliness and function of store and its equipment
  • Foster good relationship with management, peers & team members companywide
  • Be flexible - be able to cover shifts in case of employee absence
  • Be the boots on the ground - we expect our managers to do everything a Team Member and Shift Lead do!
  • Ability to push, pull, and carry up to 30 pounds

Specifically, you must have:

  • 1+ years of retail/restaurant supervisory experience. You don’t necessarily need to have been a Store Manager, but you do need to have led a team of 3+ people.
  • Food Manager Certification
